RECEIVING
THE SPIRIT IS THE SAME AS BAPTISM IN THE SPIRIT
Acts 2:38 Acts 8:15-17 Acts 10:44-47 Acts 11:15-17
These passages are generally accepted as
referring to baptism in the Spirit even though they say "receive the Holy
Spirit", "the Holy Spirit came on" or was "poured
out". This is because "receiving the Holy Spirit" is the
same as being "Baptized with the Holy Spirit" and "the Holy
Spirit coming on"
"Baptism in the Spirit" is when God makes his home in our hearts by giving us
his Spirit. It is the same as regeneration.
For the faithful Jews, who were already regenerate as a result of
circumcision by the Spirit, Baptism in the Spirit is an additional work of the
Holy Spirit in the Hearts of Believers who accepted Christ as Lord. It
confers additional powers and benefits to all believers who accept Christ.
For the Gentiles, it is the only way that they can be regenerated.
It is when a person receives the Holy Spirit for the first time and becomes a
new person in Christ. It is essential for regeneration. Gentiles
cannot be born again without it. It is God making his home in their heart.

THERE
IS ONLY ONE BAPTISM
(with an inward aspect and an outward aspect)
Ephesians 4:3-6
There is only on Baptism because there is only one
conversion. All baptisms relate to conversion. Baptism, like
circumcision, has an inward aspect and an outward aspect.
THE
INWARD ASPECT : BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT AND FIRE
Matthew 3:11 Luke 3:16 Luke 11:13 Acts 2:3
Acts 8:17 Acts 9:17-18 Acts10:44-46 Acts 19:6
Baptism in fire involves the
death of the old man.
Baptism with the Spirit is
regeneration. It makes us a new creation, a child of God.
They
both take place at conversion, when we believe & invite Jesus to become our
Lord and Savior.
These
are both symbolized by water baptism.
The fire of God
THE
OUTWARD ASPECT : BAPTISM IN WATER
Matt 28:19 Acts 10:47-8 Acts 19:3-5
Baptism in water in the name
of Jesus or in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit incorporates
the baptism of John and symbolizes the inward baptism that occurs at conversion.

BAPTISM
IN THE SPIRIT IS THE BEGINNING OF OUR WALK WITH JESUS
Acts 2:41 Acts 8:12 Acts 8:36 Acts 9:18 Acts 11:15-17 1Corinthians 12:13 Galatians 3:27
Acts 2:38 Acts 10:45-48 Acts 19:2-6 Romans 6:4 Galatians 2:20 Colossians 2:12 1Peter 3:21
Baptism in water is a testimony to the fact that we
believe in Christ as our Lord and Savior and have been baptized in the Holy
Spirit and fire (or will be **).
**Since
the Holy Spirit was released to the Jews (Acts 2), the Samaritans (Acts 8) and subsequently the Gentiles
(Acts 10), there is no delay in receiving the Holy Spirit once you believe and
make Jesus lord of your life.
Baptism in water symbolizes
our conversion.
BAPTISM
IN WATER SYMBOLIZES WASHING, CLEANSING AND FORGIVENESS OF SINS
Acts 2:38 1Corinthians 6:11 Hebrews 9:22 Hebrews 10:2
Hebrews 10:22 2Peter 1:9 1John 5:6
1John 5:8 Revelation 7:14
BAPTISM
IN WATER AND BAPTISM IN THE SPIRIT ARE CLOSELY LINKED BUT ARE USUALLY NOT
SIMULTANEOUS
Acts 8:14-17 Acts 10:45-8 Acts 19:5-6 Mark 16:16
Baptism in water and Baptism
in the Holy Spirit are coupled together in these passages because one symbolizes
the other, even though they may not take place simultaneously

BAPTISM IN THE SPIRIT IS CLOSELY RELATED TO BEING BORN
AGAIN
John 1:12-13 John 3:5
Born again has a water aspect as well as a spiritual
aspect
Regeneration results from receiving
the Spirit and confessing Christ as your Lord and Saviour in the waters of

WE
ARE BORN AGAIN BY BELIEVING
John 1:12-13 1John 5:1
Note: Born again is a term
that is used in only one Gospel (John's). It is equivalent to Baptism in the
Holy Spirit and Baptism in water mentioned in the other gospels. While the
term born again shows that baptism in water is linked to
baptism in the Spirit (see John 3:5) it is not teaching something different to
the other gospels.
Jesus
introduced the term born again when he was talking to Nicodemus (John chapter
3). Nicodemus, being a teacher of Israel should have already known what
Jesus was saying! (John 3:10)
Born
again is a general term that covers both the Old and the New covenant. The
Jews were God's chosen people. They were meant to be circumcised not only
in the flesh but also in the heart by the Spirit.
Abraham was circumcised in heart by the Spirit. The Israelites were not
allowed into the tent of meeting unless they were circumcised not only in the
flesh, but also in the heart.
We
too are circumcised when we are baptized by the Spirit (Col
2:11-15)
Jesus says
that nobody can enter the Kingdom of Heaven unless he is born again. Abraham
was therefore born again, not by baptism by the Spirit but by circumcision by
the Spirit!
In
Jeremiah's time and again in Christ's time, the Jews had become uncircumcised in
heart.

was a gap between believing and receiving because
the Holy Spirit had not been released yet

FOLLOWING
BAPTISM IN THE SPIRIT WE NEED REPEATED FILLINGS WITH THE SPIRIT
Luke 4:1 Luke 10:21 Acts 2:4 Acts 4:8 Acts 4:31 Acts 6:3
Acts 6:5 Acts 7:55 Acts 9:17 Acts 11:24 Acts 13:9 Acts 13:52 Ephesians 3:19 Ephesians 5:18
When we turn to God and worship
him, he fills us with his Spirit.
We should be filled with
the spirit continually after our conversion (the time when we first
received the spirit).
We
need to keep turning to him so that we do not run dry
When we are filled with the
Spirit at or after conversion, God transforms us and sanctifies us.
There are many different
manifestations, signs,
fruit and gifts
of being filled with the spirit (see below).
Speaking in tongues is not
synonymous with Baptism or even filled with the Spirit - not
everybody shall speak in tongues.
When God pours out, we fill up. To stay full, we need to keep
turning to him.

CERTAIN
INDIVIDUALS WERE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT BEFORE PENTECOST
Luke 1:15 Luke 1:41 Luke 1:67

THE HOLY SPIRIT TOO
Acts 2:38
THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS TO BE POURED OUT ON ALL PEOPLE
Acts

The
out pouring of the Holy Spirit is the same as being filled with the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 3:6 Colossians 1:27
JEWS WHO HAD ONLY THE BAPTISM OF JOHN
HAD TO GET BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF JESUS - JOHN'S BAPTISM WAS NOT ENOUGH
Acts 19:1-7
John the Baptist only preached to the Jews. Hence these disciples
were Jews who had been baptized by John but had yet to hear the Gospel of Jesus
Christ. This passage shows that Jews do need to be baptized in the name of
the Lord Jesus Christ.
PETER,
JOHN AND PAUL WERE ANOINTED TO BAPTIZE PEOPLE WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
Acts 8:17 Acts 19:6
But the laying on of hands
is not essential for baptism in the Holy Spirit.

NOT ALL SHALL SPEAK IN TONGUES
1Corinthians 12:30
Baptism in the Spirit is Essential to being a Christian. Gentiles cannot be born again unless they are Baptized in
the Spirit. Baptism in the Spirit
is not the same as speaking in tongues. Not all shall speak in tongues.
But all need to be Baptized in the Spirit. If you are Born again, you have received and have been
Baptized in the Spirit.
