Baptism

What is baptism in the Spirit?

For the faithful Jews, who were already regenerate as a result of circumcision by the Spirit, Baptism in the Spirit is an additional work of the Holy Spirit in the Hearts of Believers who accepted Christ as Lord.  It confers additional powers and benefits to all believers who accept Christ.

For the Gentiles, it is the only way that they can be regenerated.  It is when a person receives the Holy Spirit for the first time and becomes a new person in Christ.  It is essential for regeneration.  Gentiles cannot be born again without it.  It is God making his home in their heart.

What is baptism in fire?

This is how the 'Old Man' is killed.  When we are Baptized in the Holy Spirit and fire, we become a new creation and the Old man is burnt away.

When do they occur?

At our conversion when we first believe and decide to make Jesus our Lord and Saviour.

Are they related to baptism in water?

Yes.  Baptism in water symbolizes them both, although it usually does not take place at the same time.

What are the signs of baptism in the Holy Spirit?

Praising God, Fruit of the Spirit, Gifts of the Spirit and various other manifestations such as crying without being sad.

Can you be Born Again and not baptized in the Holy Spirit?

No, unless you are a Descendant of Abraham and circumcised by the Spirit.   Jews can be Born Again as a result of circumcision by the Spirit.

Why does the Bible say that there is only one baptism?

Because all Baptisms, regardless of whether they are in water, fire or the Spirit relate to our conversion and we are only converted once.  Baptism in water is a symbol of our conversion even if it takes place many years later.  We have not been converted until we have been Baptized in the Holy Spirit and Fire.  This occurs when we first believe and decide to follow Christ and make him Lord of our lives.

Why should we be baptized in water?

Because the Bible says that we should.  It is a command of Christ that we be Baptized.  Baptism is also a public confession of your faith and the Bible says that we need to confess Christ.

What does baptism in water symbolize?

Baptism symbolizes our death and rebirth by our going down into the water and then coming up.

What other terms does the bible use to refer to baptism in the Holy Spirit?

Regeneration, Rebirth, Renewal, Receive the Holy Spirit, The Holy Spirit came upon

What is the difference between being baptized in the Spirit and being filled with the Spirit?

Baptism in the Holy Spirit is the initial reception of the Holy Spirit at our conversion.  We are only Baptized once but we are filled many times.   We are filled with the Spirit when we turn to God and focus on him and confess any sin that has blocked the fellowship between his Spirit and ours.  When we are filled with the Spirit, our minds are transformed and we are sanctified a little more.  This is how we grow and mature in Christ.  When we are filled with the Spirit, our lives become fruitful.

Why do people often cry when they are baptized with the Holy Spirit and fire?

Crying is a sign of repentance.  People are usually happy despite crying.

What are the fruit of being filled with the Spirit?

Love, peace, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.
