Baptism in the Spirit is how

New Testament Believers are Born Again

 

JESUS CAME SO THAT WE COULD BE BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Mat 3:11 "I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

Mark 1:8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

Luke 3:16 John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

John 1:29-34 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel." Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God."

Note: every Gospel begins with John the Baptist saying "I baptize you with water (for repentance) but one who is greater than I will follow.  He will Baptize you with the Holy Spirit."   It is Jesus who baptizes us with the Holy Spirit.  This is the main reason he came.

 

 

 

JESUS DID NOT BAPTIZE ANYBODY WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT UNTIL AFTER HE HAD ASCENDED

Acts 1:1-9 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.  After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

Those who believed in Jesus would later receive the Holy Spirit (at Pentecost). Up until that time the Holy Spirit had not been given as Jesus had not been glorified.

 

 

 


JESUS WAS ANOINTED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT WHEN HE WAS BAPTIZED IN WATER BY JOHN


Matthew 3:13-17 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."

Mat 12:18 "Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations.

Mark 1:9-11 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."

Luke 3:21-23 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased." Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry.

Luke 4:18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed,

John 1:32-4 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God."

Acts 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

The Holy Spirit anointed Jesus at His Baptism.  From that time on, the people recognized his authority and he was empowered to heal all those who were under the power of the devil.

Interestingly, Jesus did not speak in Tongues.  Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit at his baptism.  He already had the Spirit.   The Spirit of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are the same person.

JESUS ANOINTED THE DISCIPLES TO GO AND MAKE MORE DISCIPLES, BAPTIZING THEM IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, SON AND HOLY SPIRIT

Matt 28:18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

John 3:22 After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized.

John 4:2 although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples.

Acts 2:38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Ac. 8:17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

Acts 10:43-8 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.

Acts 11:15-16 "As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. Then I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'

Ac. 19:6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

Jesus gave the disciples authority to go and make more disciples, thereby "anointing" them.

RECEIVING THE SPIRIT IS THE SAME AS BAPTISM IN THE SPIRIT

Ac.2:38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 8:15-17 When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

Acts 10:44-47 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have."

Acts 11:15-17 "As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. Then I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' So if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could oppose God?"
 
These passages are generally accepted as referring to Baptism in the Spirit even though they say "receive the Holy Spirit", "the Holy Spirit came on" or was "poured out".  This is because "receiving the Holy Spirit" is the same as being "Baptized with the Holy Spirit" and "the Holy Spirit coming on"

"Baptism in the Spirit" is when God makes his home in our hearts by giving us his Spirit.  It is the same as regeneration.

For the faithful Jews, who were already regenerate as a result of circumcision by the Spirit, Baptism in the Spirit is an additional work of the Holy Spirit in the Hearts of Believers who accepted Christ as Lord.  It confers additional powers and benefits to all believers who accept Christ.

For the Gentiles, it is the only way that they can be regenerated.  It is when a person receives the Holy Spirit for the first time and becomes a new person in Christ.  It is essential for regeneration.  Gentiles cannot be born again without it.  It is God making his home in their heart.

THERE IS ONLY ONE BAPTISM (with an inward aspect and an outward aspect)

Eph 4:3-6 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit-- just as you were called to one hope when you were called-- one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

There is only on Baptism because there is only one conversion.  All baptisms relate to conversion.  Baptism, like circumcision,  has an inward aspect and an outward aspect.


 

THE INWARD ASPECT : BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT AND FIRE

Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord--Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here--has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit." Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized,

Baptism in fire involves the death of the old man.   See The fire of God

Baptism with the Spirit is regeneration.  It makes us a new creation, a child of God.  

They both take place at conversion, when we believe & invite Jesus to become our Lord and Savior.

These are both symbolized by water baptism.

THE OUTWARD ASPECT : BAPTISM IN WATER 

Matt 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Acts 10:47-8 "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

Acts 19:3-5 So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?" "John's baptism," they replied. Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus." On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.

Baptism in water in the name of Jesus or in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit incorporates the baptism of John and symbolizes the inward baptism that occurs at conversion.

BAPTISM IN THE SPIRIT IS THE BEGINNING OF OUR WALK WITH JESUS

Acts 2:41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

Acts 8:12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

Acts 8:36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, "Look, here is water. Why shouldn't I be baptized?"

Acts 9:18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized

Acts 11:15-17 "As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. Then I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'

1Co.12:13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free--and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

Gal 3:27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

 

 

 

BAPTISM IN WATER IS A TESTIMONY TO OUR DEATH AND REBIRTH BY BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT AND FIRE

Rom 6:4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

Gal 2:20  I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Col 2:12 having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

1Pe3:21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also--not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

Baptism in water is a testimony to the fact that we believe in Christ as our Lord and Savior and have been baptized in the Holy Spirit and fire (or will be **). 

**Since the Holy Spirit was released to the Jews (Acts 2), the Samaritans (Acts 8) and subsequently the Gentiles (Acts 10), there is no delay in receiving the Holy Spirit once you believe and make Jesus lord of your life.

Baptism in water symbolizes our conversion.
 


 

BAPTISM IN WATER SYMBOLIZES WASHING, CLEANSING AND FORGIVENESS OF SINS
 
Acts 2:38  Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

1 Cor 6:11  And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Heb 9:22   In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

Heb 10:2  If it could, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.

Heb 10:22  let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

2 Pet 1:9  But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.

1Jn.5:6 This is the one who came by water and blood--Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.

1Jn.5:8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement

Rev 7:14  I answered, "Sir, you know." And he said, "These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

 

 

 

BAPTISM IN WATER AND BAPTISM IN THE SPIRIT ARE CLOSELY LINKED BUT ARE USUALLY NOT SIMULTANEOUS

Acts 8:14-17 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

Mark 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Baptism in water and Baptism in the Holy Spirit are coupled together in these passages because one symbolizes the other, even though they may not take place simultaneously

 

 

IF YOU ARE BORN AGAIN YOU HAVE RECEIVED THE SPIRIT BECAUSE RECEIVING  THE SPIRIT MAKES US A CHILD OF GOD

John 1:12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God

John 3:5-8  Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.  Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.  You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.'  The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."

Rom 8:11-16 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in youTherefore, brothers, we have an obligation--but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it.  For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.  For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father."  The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

Born again has a water aspect as well as a spiritual aspect

Regeneration results from receiving the Spirit and confessing Christ as your Lord and Saviour in the waters of Baptism

EVERYBODY WHO BELIEVES IS BORN AGAIN AND OVERCOMES THE WORLD
 
1John 5:1-5
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.  This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.  This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,  for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.  Who is it that overcomes the world? WE RECEIVE THE SPIRIT BY BELIEVING

Jn.7:37-9 37 On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

Gal.3:2,5 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?

Gal.3:14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

WE ARE SEALED BY THE SPIRIT WHEN WE BELIEVE

WE ARE BORN AGAIN BY BELIEVING

Note: Born again is a term that is used in only one Gospel (John's).  It is equivalent to Baptism in the Holy Spirit and Baptism in water mentioned in the other gospels.  While the term born again shows that baptism in water is linked to baptism in the Spirit (see John 3:5) it is not teaching something different to the other gospels.  

Jesus introduced the term born again when he was talking to Nicodemus (John chapter 3).  Nicodemus, being a teacher of Israel should have already known what Jesus was saying!  (John 3:10)  

Born again is a general term that covers both the Old and the New covenant.  The Jews were God's chosen people.  They were meant to be circumcised not only in the flesh but also in the heart by the Spirit.

We too are circumcised when we are baptized by the Spirit (Col 2:11-15)

Abraham was circumcised in heart by the Spirit.  The Israelites were not allowed into the tent of meeting unless they were circumcised not only in the flesh, but also in the heart.  (Ezek 44:9)

Jesus says that nobody can enter the Kingdom of Heaven unless he is born again.  Abraham was therefore born again, not by baptism by the Spirit but by circumcision by the Spirit!  In Jeremiah's time and again in Christ's time, the Jews had become uncircumcised in heart.

WE ARE SAVED BY BELIEVING

Jn.3:15 that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.

Jn.3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Mark 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Ac.16:31 They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household."

Rom 10: 9-10 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.

1Co.1:21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.
 
 

 

NOW WE CAN RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT THE INSTANT WE BELIEVE

Ac.10:42-8 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God

Ac.11:14-18 He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved.' "As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. Then I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' So if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could oppose God?" When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, "So then, God has granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life."

Prior to Pentecost for the Jew and Acts 10 for the Gentile, there was a gap between believing and receiving because the Holy Spirit had not been released yet
 
 
 
 

NOW BAPTISM IN THE SPIRIT IS CLOSELY LINKED TO SALVATION

Acts 5:32   We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him."

2Th.2:13 But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.

Tit.3:5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

1Pe.3:21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also--not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

WHAT DO WE HAVE TO BELIEVE

Acts 10:34-45 Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right. You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached-- how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. "We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree, but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen--by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.

 
Acts 19:2-5 and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?" "John's baptism," they replied. Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus." On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.

We have to believe in Jesus, the risen savior for the forgiveness of sins before we can receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit
 
 
 
 

FOLLOWING BAPTISM IN THE SPIRIT WE NEED REPEATED FILLINGS WITH THE SPIRIT

Lu.4:1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert,

Lu.10:21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.

Ac.2:4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Ac.4:8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers and elders of the people!

Ac.4:31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

Ac.6:3 Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them

Ac.6:5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism.

Ac.7:55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.

Ac.9:17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord--Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here--has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit."

Ac.11:24 He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.

Ac.13:9 Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said,

Ac.13:52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

Ep.3:19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Ep.5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

 
When we turn to God and worship him, he fills us with his Spirit.  This is how he transforms our soul; just a little bit at a time.

We should be filled with the spirit continually after our conversion (the time when we first received the spirit).

We need to keep turning to him so that we do not run dry

When we are filled with the Spirit at or after conversion, God transforms us and sanctifies us.

There are many different manifestations, signs, fruit and gifts of being filled with the Holy Spirit (see below).

Speaking in tongues is not synonymous with Baptism or even filled with the Spirit - not everybody shall speak in tongues.
 
When God pours out, we fill up.  To stay full, we need to keep turning to him.

CERTAIN INDIVIDUALS WERE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT BEFORE PENTECOST

Lu.1:15 for he (John the Baptist)  will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth.

Lu.1:41 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

Lu.1:67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:
 
 


 

JESUS TOLD THE DISCIPLES TO STAY IN JERUSALEM UNTIL THEY HAD BEEN BAPTIZED IN THE HOLY SPIRIT

Acts 1:1-11  In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.  After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.  On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.  For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."  So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?"  He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."  After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.  They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.  "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven."

 
 
 

THE DISCIPLES WERE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT AT PENTECOST

Acts 2:4  All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
 
 
 
 

OTHERS WERE BEING BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT TOO

Acts2:38  Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
 
 


 

THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS TO BE POURED OUT ON ALL PEOPLE

Acts 2:17-21 "'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.
The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'

The out pouring of the Holy Spirit is the same as being filled with the Holy Spirit.

 

 

THE OUTPOURING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS INITIALLY ON THE JEWISH BELIEVERS (PENTECOST)

Acts 2:5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. ........Acts 2:11  (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"

Rom 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

Rom 2:9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;

Rom 2:10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

 



AND LATER THE GENTILE BELIEVERS (ACTS 8 & ACTS 10)

Acts 10:45-47  The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.  For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have."

Rom 11:25 I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.

Rom 16:25-26 Now to him who is able to establish you by my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all nations might believe and obey him--

Eph 3:6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

Col 1:27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

 

 

 

JEWS WHO HAD ONLY THE BAPTISM OF JOHN HAD TO GET BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF JESUS - JOHN'S BAPTISM WAS NOT ENOUGH

Acts 19:1-7  While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."  So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?" "John's baptism," they replied.  Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus."  On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.  When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.  There were about twelve men in all.

John the Baptist only preached to the Jews.  Hence these disciples were Jews who had been baptized by John but had yet to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  This passage shows that Jews do need to be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

 

 


PETER, JOHN AND PAUL WERE ANOINTED TO BAPTIZE PEOPLE WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Ac. 8:17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

Ac. 19:6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

But the laying on of hands is not essential for baptism in the Holy Spirit.

PRAISING GOD IS A SIGN OF SPIRIT BAPTISM

Acts 10:45-6 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God

1 Cor 12:3  Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.

1Jn.2:23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.

1Jn.4:2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,

1Jn.4:15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God.
 

 

 

NOT ALL SHALL SPEAK IN TONGUES

1Cor 12:30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?

Baptism in the Spirit is Essential to being a Christian.  Gentiles cannot be born again unless they are Baptized in the Spirit.  Baptism in the Spirit is not the same as speaking in tongues.  Not all shall speak in tongues.  But all need to be Baptized in the Spirit.  If you are Born again, you have received and have been Baptized in the Spirit.

 

 

 

BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT BRINGS THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT

Mat 3:8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

Mat 3:10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

Mat 7:16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?

Mat 7:17 Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.

Mat 7:18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.

Mat 7:19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

Mat 7:20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

Mat 12:33 "Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.

Mat 21:19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, "May you never bear fruit again!" Immediately the tree withered.

Mat 21:34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit.

Mat 21:43 "Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.

Mark 11:13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.

Luke 3:8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

Luke 6:43 "No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.

Luke 6:44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers.

Luke 13:7 So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, 'For three years now I've been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven't found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?'  "'Sir,' the man replied, 'leave it alone for one more year, and I'll dig around it and fertilize it.  If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.'"

John 15:2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.

John 15:4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

John 15:5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

John 15:8 This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

John 15:16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit--fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.

Rom 7:4-5 So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God. For when we were controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death.

Gal 5:17-24 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.

Eph 5:9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)

Phil 1:11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ--to the glory and praise of God.

Col 1:6 that has come to you. All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God's grace in all its truth.

Col 1:10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,

Heb 13:15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise--the fruit of lips that confess his name.

James 3:17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

Jude 1:12 These men are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm--shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted--twice dead.

 
 
 

GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT ALSO COME WITH THE BAPTISM WITH THE SPIRIT

Rom 12:6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith.

1 Cor 12:1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.

1 Cor 12:4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.  There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.   There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.

1 Cor 12:8-11  To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,  to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.  All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines. 

1 Cor 12:28 And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues.  Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues ? Do all interpret?  But eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way.

1 Cor 13:1-2  If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.  If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

1 Cor 13:8-12 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.  For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears.  When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.  Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.  And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

1 Cor 14:1-5  Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.  But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.

1 Cor 14:12 So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.

 
 
 

OTHER MANIFESTATIONS WILL ALSO FOLLOW BAPTISM WITH THE SPIRIT

Mark 16:17-20 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well." After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.

1Cor12:7  Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

Note that Mark says that these signs will accompany those who believe (not those who are baptized in the Holy Spirit) again showing the link between believing and baptism in the Holy Spirit.
 
 
 
 

FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD (AS IS A TREE WITHOUT FRUIT)

James 2:14-26 What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do. You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that--and shudder. You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless ? Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God's friend. You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone. In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

 

  
 
 

JESUS HAD TO BE GLORIFIED BEFORE THE HOLY SPIRIT COULD BE GIVEN TO THE JEWISH BELIEVERS AND LATER THE GENTILE BELIEVERS


Jn.7:38-9 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

Jn 16:7-8 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

Acts 11:19-20 Now those who had been scattered by the persecution in connection with Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, telling the message only to Jews. Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus.

 
 
 
 

PETER HAD TO OPEN THE DOOR FOR THE GENTILES BEFORE THEY COULD RECEIVE THE SPIRIT

Matt 16:15-19 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"  Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."  Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.  And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. Acts 8:14-17 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

Ac. 10:33-4 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us." THE EXAMPLE OF THE DISCIPLES

Acts 2:4  All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Ac.4:8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers and elders of the people!

Ac.4:31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

Ac.13:52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

 

STEPHEN

Ac.6:3 Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them

Ac.6:5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism.

Ac.7:55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.

 

PAUL

Ac.9:17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord--Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here--has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit."

Ac.11:24 He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.

Ac.13:9 Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said,

John 17:13  "I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.

Col 2:2  My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ,

Eph 1:23   which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

Ep.3:19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Ep.5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

Phil 1:9-11  And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,  so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ,  filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ--to the glory and praise of God.

Philem 1:6  I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.

1 Pet 1:8  Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
