The Church

The Church

JUST AS CHRIST HAS ONLY ONE BODY, THERE IS ONLY ONE CHURCH

THIS "UNIVERSAL" CHURCH IS MADE UP OF ALL BELIEVERS

Rom 7:4 So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.

Rom 12:4-5 Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

1 Cor 10:16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?

1 Cor 12:27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

Eph 4:12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up

The word "catholic" means "universal"

The Church is the body of Christ, of which, Christ is the head.

Christ has only one body with many members.  These members have different functions.

The Local Church is the practical expression of the body of Christ.  In the early Church, there were no denominations.  There was only one Church in each Locality.  In other words: one city, one Church.

The basis for coming together in the early Church was locality.  Christians tended to meet with other Christians in the same locality.

As we see from the seven Churches in revelation, each church was different.  Each church had it's own Spirit.  The Spirit of a church is an expression of the Spirit of God.  There were seven Churches and so there were seven Spirits of God which were sent out into all the earth.

Today, locality is not the only basis by which Christians come together.  Christians with similar beliefs and even racial origins tend to congregate together and form denominations.  Nevertheless, each of these congregations are a manifestation of God and have a unique Spirit.

The Bible says that there is no longer Jew nor Greek, male nor female for we are all one in Christ Jesus.

Christians need to meet together in order to expand their view of God.  If we only meet with people who are like minded, we may not grow as much.  We come to know the depth and breadth, height and width of God's love by fellowshipping with all the saints.

LOCAL CHURCHES CAN DIFFER FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER

NOW DAYS, ONE PLACE MAY HAVE SEVERAL DENOMINATIONS

YET THEY ARE ALL PART OF THE BODY OF CHRIST

EACH ONE HAS A DIFFERENT FUNCTION

THEY HAVE THEIR OWN IDENTITY AND THEIR OWN SPIRIT

EACH CHURCH IS A UNIQUE  EXPRESSION OF GOD ON THE EARTH

THE SPIRIT OF A CHURCH IS AN EXPRESSION OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD

TRUTH AND DOCTRINE SHOULD NOT DIFFER FROM CHURCH TO CHURCH

BUT CHURCHES CAN DIFFER IN THEIR CALLING, EMPHASIS, STYLE OF WORSHIP, TYPES OF SERVICE, FORMALITY

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR A SINGLE CHURCH TO MANIFEST EVERY ASPECT OF GOD FULLY AS GOD IS TOO BIG

JUST AS THERE ARE SEVEN SPIRITS OF GOD AND SEVEN CHURCHES

THERE ARE MANY SPIRITS OF GOD THAT HAVE BEEN SENT OUT INTO THE WORLD

THEY DON'T HAVE TO BE THE SAME

1Cor 11:17-19  In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good.  In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it.  No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval.

THE SEVEN CHURCHES

Rev 1:4 John, To the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne,

Rev 1:11 which said: "Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea."

Rev 1:20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

THE SEVEN SPIRITS OF GOD

Rev 3:1  "To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.

Rev 4:5  From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. Before the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God.

Rev 5:6  Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

The seven spirits of God are the seven churches.  These seven churches are parts of the body of Christ yet they are unique.

They may exemplify the fingers and eyes of God Spreading out into the Earth but they also help us to understand where "denominations" fit in to God's plan.

Just as there will be Overcomers in each of the Seven Churches, there will be Overcomers in each denomination.  No denomination can claim that they exclusively are 'The Body of Christ'.

Each Church or Denomination is a part of the Body of Christ and the world will know it by the way that that part treats the other parts.
