Abraham's first two
children were Ishmael and Isaac. Abraham had other children but sent
them off to the East. (Genesis 25:1-6)
When Abraham died,
he left everything to Isaac. (Genesis
25:5)
Abrahams offspring
were to be reckoned thru Isaac.
(Genesis 21:12)
This was a promise that God made to Abraham. This is mentioned twice in
the New Testament. (Romans 9:7 & Hebrews
11:18)
Ishmael was circumcised on the
same day as Abraham.
God promised to
bless Ishmael and make him into a great nation as well.
Ishmael, the son of
an Egyptian slave (Hagar), married an Egyptian
(Genesis 21:21)
and had twelve sons who became twelve tribal leaders. As prophesied,
they were a wild and untamed people who lived at odds with their brothers.
(Genesis 16:12)
His descendants, the
Ishmaelites, brought Joseph as a slave from his brothers
(Genesis 37:25-28)
and carried him into Egypt and sold him to Potiphar
(Genesis 39:1).
Ishmael was present
at Abrahams death and helped Isaac burry him. Abraham left everything to
Isaac and God blessed him. (Gen 25:7-11)
The descendants of
Ishmael settled to the East of Egypt in the direction of Asshur (situated on
the Tigris river) from Havilar to Shur.
(Genesis 25:12-18)
The Ishmaelites are
thought to be the wandering Bedouin tribes who populated
the North and West of the Arabian Peninsula giving rise to most of the Arab
nations. They now follow Mohammad, but they look to Ishmael as their
spiritual father.
Were the Ishmaelites considered to be part of the
Assembly of the Lord? They still
practice the custom of circumcision!
Isaac had two
children: Esau & Jacob.
Jacob was renamed
Israel.
Jacob (Israel) had
twelve sons who also became twelve tribal leaders.
Esau was the father
of the Edomites. He was the first born of Isaac and the brother of
Jacob. He sold his birthright to Jacob.
The Moabites and the
Amonites were descendants of Lot. The nephew of Abraham. They were
included in the Assembly of the Lord until they conspired against Israel.
After the Israelites
went to live in Egypt, the Egyptians were allowed to enter the Assembly of the
Lord.
Assembly of the Lord
Deuteronomy 23:1-8
No one who has been emasculated by crushing or cutting may enter the
assembly of the LORD.
No one born of a forbidden marriage nor any of his descendants may enter
the assembly of the LORD, even down to the tenth generation.
No Ammonite or Moabite or any of his descendants may enter the assembly
of the LORD, even down to the tenth generation. For they did
not come to meet you with bread and water on your way when you came out of
Egypt, and they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim to
pronounce a curse on you. However, the LORD your God would not listen to
Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the LORD your God
loves you. Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them as long as you
live.
Do not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother. Do not abhor an
Egyptian, because you lived as an alien in his country. The third
generation of children born to them may enter the assembly of the LORD.
Joshua 22:16 "The whole assembly of the LORD says: 'How
could you break faith with the God of Israel like this? How could you turn
away from the LORD and build yourselves an altar in rebellion against him now?
1 Chronicles 28:8 "So now I charge you in the sight of all Israel
and of the assembly of the LORD, and in the hearing of our God: Be
careful to follow all the commands of the LORD your God, that you may possess
this good land and pass it on as an inheritance to your descendants forever.
Micah 2:5 Therefore you will have no one in the assembly of the
LORD to divide the land by lot.
Assembly of Israel
Leviticus 19:2 "Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to
them: 'Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.
Numbers 25:6 Then an Israelite man brought to his family a Midianite woman
right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while
they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
Deuteronomy 31:30 And Moses recited the words of this song from beginning
to end in the hearing of the whole assembly of Israel:
Joshua 8:35 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that
Joshua did not read to the whole assembly of Israel, including the
women and children, and the aliens who lived among them.
Joshua 22:12 the whole assembly of Israel gathered at Shiloh to go
to war against them.
1 Kings 8:5 and King Solomon and the entire assembly of Israel that
had gathered about him were before the ark, sacrificing so many sheep and
cattle that they could not be recorded or counted.
1 Kings 8:14 While the whole assembly of Israel was standing there,
the king turned around and blessed them.
1 Kings 8:22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in front of
the whole assembly of Israel, spread out his hands toward heaven

2 Chronicles 24:6 Therefore the king summoned Jehoiada the chief priest and
said to him, "Why haven't you required the Levites to bring in from Judah and
Jerusalem the tax imposed by Moses the servant of the LORD and by the
assembly of Israel for the Tent of the Testimony?"
Psalms 68:26 Praise God in the great congregation; praise the LORD in the
assembly of Israel.
Community of Israel
Exodus 12:3 Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day
of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each
household.
Exodus 12:6 Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when
all the people of the community of Israel must slaughter them at
twilight.
Exodus 12:19 For seven days no yeast is to be found in your houses. And
whoever eats anything with yeast in it must be cut off from the community
of Israel, whether he is an alien or native-born.
Exodus 12:47 The whole community of Israel must celebrate it.
Leviticus 16:17 No one is to be in the Tent of Meeting from the time Aaron
goes in to make atonement in the Most Holy Place until he comes out, having
made atonement for himself, his household and the whole community of
Israel.
Joshua 22:18 And are you now turning away from the LORD? "'If you rebel
against the LORD today, tomorrow he will be angry with the whole community
of Israel.
Joshua 22:20 When Achan son of Zerah acted unfaithfully regarding the
devoted things, did not wrath come upon the whole community of Israel?
He was not the only one who died for his sin.'"
Jacob and Israel
Genesis 32:28 Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob,
but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have
overcome."
Genesis 35:10 God said to him, "Your name is Jacob, but you will no
longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel. " So he named
him Israel.
Genesis 35:22 While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in
and slept with his father's concubine Bilhah, and Israel heard of it.
Jacob had twelve sons:
Genesis 46:2 And God spoke to Israel in a vision at night and said,
"Jacob! Jacob!" "Here I am," he replied.
Genesis 46:8 These are the names of the sons of Israel (Jacob and
his descendants) who went to Egypt: Reuben the firstborn of Jacob.
Genesis 48:2 When Jacob was told, "Your son Joseph has come to you,"
Israel rallied his strength and sat up on the bed.
Genesis 49:2 "Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob; listen to your
father Israel.
Genesis 49:7 Cursed be their anger, so fierce, and their fury, so cruel! I
will scatter them in Jacob and disperse them in Israel.
Genesis 49:24 But his bow remained steady, his strong arms stayed limber,
because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the
Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,
Exodus 1:1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to
Egypt with Jacob, each with his family:
Exodus 3:16 "Go, assemble the elders of Israel and say to them, 'The
LORD, the God of your fathers--the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob--
appeared to me and said: I have watched over you and have seen what has been
done to you in Egypt.
Exodus 19:3 Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the
mountain and said, "This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob
and what you are to tell the people of Israel:
Numbers 23:7 Then Balaam uttered his oracle: "Balak brought me from Aram,
the king of Moab from the eastern mountains. 'Come,' he said, 'curse Jacob
for me; come, denounce Israel.'
Numbers 23:10 Who can count the dust of Jacob or number the fourth
part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and may my end
be like theirs!"
Numbers 23:21 "No misfortune is seen in Jacob, no misery observed in
Israel. The LORD their God is with them; the shout of the King is among
them.
Numbers 23:23 There is no sorcery against Jacob, no divination
against Israel. It will now be said of Jacob and of Israel,
'See what God has done!'
Numbers 24:5 "How beautiful are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling
places, O Israel!
Numbers 24:17 "I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star
will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. He
will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of all the sons of Sheth.
Deuteronomy 33:10 He teaches your precepts to Jacob and your law to
Israel. He offers incense before you and whole burnt offerings on your
altar.
1 Kings 18:31 Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes
descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying,
"Your name shall be Israel."
2 Kings 17:34 To this day they persist in their former practices. They
neither worship the LORD nor adhere to the decrees and ordinances, the laws
and commands that the LORD gave the descendants of Jacob, whom he named
Israel.
1 Chronicles 16:13 O descendants of Israel his servant, O sons of
Jacob, his chosen ones.
1 Chronicles 16:17 He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to
Israel as an everlasting covenant:
Psalms 14:7 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
When the LORD restores the fortunes of his people, let Jacob rejoice
and Israel be glad!
Psalms 22:23 You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of
Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
Psalms 53:6 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
When God restores the fortunes of his people, let Jacob rejoice and
Israel be glad!
Psalms 78:5 He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in
Israel, which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children,
Psalms 78:21 When the LORD heard them, he was very angry; his fire broke
out against Jacob, and his wrath rose against Israel,
Psalms 78:71 from tending the sheep he brought him to be the shepherd of
his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance.
Psalms 81:4 this is a decree for Israel, an ordinance of the God of
Jacob.
Psalms 105:10 He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel
as an everlasting covenant:
Psalms 105:23 Then Israel entered Egypt; Jacob lived as an
alien in the land of Ham.
Psalms 114:1 When Israel came out of Egypt, the house of Jacob
from a people of foreign tongue,
Psalms 135:4 For the LORD has chosen Jacob to be his own, Israel
to be his treasured possession.
Psalms 147:19 He has revealed his word to Jacob, his laws and
decrees to Israel.
Isaiah 9:8 The Lord has sent a message against Jacob; it will fall
on Israel.
Isaiah 10:20 In that day the remnant of Israel, the survivors of the
house of Jacob, will no longer rely on him who struck them down but
will truly rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.
Isaiah 14:1 The LORD will have compassion on Jacob; once again he
will choose Israel and will settle them in their own land. Aliens will
join them and unite with the house of Jacob.
Isaiah 27:6 In days to come Jacob will take root, Israel will
bud and blossom and fill all the world with fruit.
Isaiah 29:23 When they see among them their children, the work of my hands,
they will keep my name holy; they will acknowledge the holiness of the Holy
One of Jacob, and will stand in awe of the God of Israel.
Isaiah 40:27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel,
"My way is hidden from the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God"?
Isaiah 41:8 "But you, O Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I
have chosen, you descendants of Abraham my friend,
Isaiah 41:14 Do not be afraid, O worm Jacob, O little Israel,
for I myself will help you," declares the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of
Israel.
Isaiah 42:24 Who handed Jacob over to become loot, and Israel

would not follow his ways; they did not obey his law.

consign Jacob to destruction and Israel to scorn.

whom I have chosen.

by the name of Jacob; still another will write on his hand, 'The
Lord's,' and will take the name Israel.
Isaiah 44:21 "Remember these things, O Jacob, for you are my
servant, O Israel. I have made you, you are my servant; O Israel,
I will not forget you.
Isaiah 44:23 Sing for joy, O heavens, for the LORD has done this; shout
aloud, O earth beneath. Burst into song, you mountains, you forests and all
your trees, for the LORD has redeemed Jacob, he displays his glory in
Israel.
Isaiah 45:4 For the sake of Jacob my servant, of Israel my
chosen, I summon you by name and bestow on you a title of honor, though you do
not acknowledge me.
Isaiah 46:3 "Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all you who remain of
the house of Israel, you whom I have upheld since you were conceived,
and have carried since your birth.
Isaiah 48:1 "Listen to this, O house of Jacob, you who are called by
the name of Israel and come from the line of Judah, you who take oaths
in the name of the LORD and invoke the God of Israel-- but not in truth
or righteousness--
Isaiah 48:12 "Listen to me, O Jacob, Israel, whom I have called: I
am he; I am the first and I am the last.
Isaiah 49:5 And now the LORD says-- he who formed me in the womb to be his
servant to bring Jacob back to him and gather Israel to himself,
for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD and my God has been my strength--
Isaiah 49:6 he says: "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to
restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I
have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring
my salvation to the ends of the earth."
Jeremiah 2:4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, all you
clans of the house of Israel.
Jeremiah 10:16 He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these, for
he is the Maker of all things, including Israel, the tribe of his
inheritance-- the LORD Almighty is his name.
Jeremiah 30:10 "'So do not fear, O Jacob my servant; do not be
dismayed, O Israel,' declares the LORD. 'I will surely save you out of
a distant place, your descendants from the land of their exile. Jacob
will again have peace and security, and no one will make him afraid.
Jeremiah 31:7 This is what the LORD says: "Sing with joy for Jacob;
shout for the foremost of the nations. Make your praises heard, and say, 'O
LORD, save your people, the remnant of Israel.'
Jeremiah 46:27 "Do not fear, O Jacob my servant; do not be dismayed,
O Israel. I will surely save you out of a distant place, your
descendants from the land of their exile. Jacob will again have peace
and security, and no one will make him afraid.
Lamentations 2:3 In fierce anger he has cut off every horn of Israel.
He has withdrawn his right hand at the approach of the enemy. He has
burned in Jacob like a flaming fire that consumes everything around it.
Ezekiel 20:5 and say to them: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: On the
day I chose Israel, I swore with uplifted hand to the descendants of
the house of Jacob and revealed myself to them in Egypt. With uplifted
hand I said to them, "I am the LORD your God."
Ezekiel 28:25 "'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: When I gather the
people of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered, I
will show myself holy among them in the sight of the nations. Then they will
live in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob.
Ezekiel 39:25 "Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I will now
bring Jacob back from captivity and will have compassion on all the
people of Israel, and I will be zealous for my holy name.
Hosea 12:12 Jacob fled to the country of Aram ; Israel served
to get a wife, and to pay for her he tended sheep.
Micah 2:12 "I will surely gather all of you, O Jacob; I will surely
bring together the remnant of Israel. I will bring them together like
sheep in a pen, like a flock in its pasture; the place will throng with
people.
Micah 3:1 Then I said, "Listen, you leaders of Jacob, you rulers of
the house of Israel. Should you not know justice,
Micah 3:8 But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the
LORD, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his
transgression, to Israel his sin.
Micah 3:9 Hear this, you leaders of the house of Jacob, you rulers
of the house of Israel, who despise justice and distort all that is
right;
Nahum 2:2 The LORD will restore the splendor of Jacob like the
splendor of Israel, though destroyers have laid them waste and have
ruined their vines.
Romans 11:26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The
deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.
ABRAHAM'S OFFSPRING WERE TO BE RECKONED
THROUGH ISAAC
Genesis 21:12 But God said to him, "Do not be so distressed about the boy
and your maidservant. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is
through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.
Romans 9:7 Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham's
children. On the contrary, "It is through Isaac that your offspring
will be reckoned."
Hebrews 11:18 even though God had said to him, "It is through Isaac
that your offspring will be reckoned."
